News: CIGNA HealthCare Acquires Sagamore Health Network
CIGNA HealthCare, Sagamore Health Network, Employee Benefits
Provider, Self-Insured Employers, Third-Party Administrators
One of Russell Benefits Consulting's employee benefits providers, Sagamore Health Network, Inc., the
largest leased health care provider network in Indiana, was acquired by
CIGNA Healthcare.
The acquisition followed an agreement signed earlier, under which Sagamore was already offering access to
its network to members of two CIGNA plans.
The Sagamore Health Network serves health claims payer organizations, self-insured employers
and third-party administrators in Indiana and parts of Kentucky and Ohio.
This acquisition strengthens Sagamore's organization and brings many advantages to
the approximately 300,000 members they serve, as well as CIGNA's
approximately 150,000 medical plan members in Indiana.
Additionally, CIGNA Dental, the dental care unit of CIGNA
HealthCare, serves 110,000 dental plan members in the state.
When asked if this change will affect his company’s relationship with either Sagamore or CIGNA,
Stephen Russell, president of Russell Benefit Consulting and
McGuire & Russell Insurance Services,
stated "If anything, the change will only enhance the level
of service we will be able to provide."
"Sagamore will
eventually add a variety of CIGNA resources,
capabilities and value-added health and wellness programs to
its portfolio, so we'll be able to offer our clients an even
greater range of product and service options."
"The primary impact to our company will be in CIGNA's
growing role in Indiana and its strength as a national
healthcare provider," he continued. "It adds significantly
to the range of health benefit choices available to Indiana
consumers and, in the process, brings strong new competition
to the state's health benefits and services marketplace,
always a plus for the payer."
In response to a question about the impact the merger might have on his
customers, Mr. Russell stated "It should not have any
negative impact on our current Sagamore clients. If
anything, just the opposite."
Sagamore will continue to operate under its own brand
and employ the same approach that has helped the company
earn its reputation for quality, customer service and
competitive pricing,
