A number of options exist when selecting what type of life insurance to
offer your employee. Employers may choose to offer one or more of these
voluntary plans. Premium costs can then be deducted from employees'
paychecks on a pre-tax basis:
- Group
Term Life Insurance - one of the most
affordable ways to protect families from the
economic burden that the death of a family member
can cause. Employees can purchase inexpensive term life coverage for themselves
and for their spouses and children
- Group Supplemental Life Insurance - for employees who want to take their employer-funded plans to the next level, many insurance
companies offer Supplemental Life insurance to provide coverages above
the levels available through the primary plan.
Employees can choose additional protection of up to $300,000 or more, depending on the plan.
Some plans even allow the employee to convert the supplemental coverage
into a permanent life insurance policy.
- Group Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance (AD&D) -
Group AD&D provides employees with additional
financial protection if an accident results in the death or severe
injury of the insured, to help compensate for
any additional costs that may arise. In the case of
dismemberment, a payout schedule determines the benefit level based on
the severity of the injury.
- Universal Life Insurance - cash value (premiums paid) accumulates on a tax-deferred basis,
and accumulates with interest. Depending on the plan, interest rates are
usually greater than or equal to the interest rate guaranteed in the
policy.
Universal Life plans generally offer similar features as Term Life
Insurance, with one big difference. The accumulated cash value can be borrowed against at
a low interest rate. The death benefit would be reduced by the amount of
the outstanding loan(s) and any unpaid interest accrued.
